You've sold me on this series. Would you recommend reading these in order starting with the first book? Or if they're more standalone, is there a different book you'd recommend starting with?
I would start with Every Heart A Doorway (book 1). After that, even numbered entries can be read standalone (my favorite of the series are #2, Down Among the Sticks and Bones, and #4 In an Absent Dream).
The odd-numbered ones follow a continuous storyline after the first, so #1, #3, #5..
I haven't read 6-8 yet, but I assume they continue the pattern.

Mmm--good to know. Thank you!
